Abstract

The past few years have witnessed a dramatic growth in business transactions carried out using the Internet, usually referred to by the term e-Commerce. As with any emerging phenomenon, e-Commerce is certainly accompanied by its share of hype, and failures of e- Commerce retailers have become far more common than their successes in the past few months. As we argue in the paper, supply chain management is proving to be a critical success factor for e-Commerce retailers. This paper is aimed at identifying the supply chain strategies for e-Commerce retailers using the example of online grocery, one of the most challenging segments of e- Commerce retailing. Central to the research presented in this paper are a broad-brush study of the supply chain practices of ten online grocers and a focused case study of GroceryWorks, an online grocery company. The paper identifies seven supply chain strategies that are critical for success in the online grocery industry. These strategies span such areas as strategic alliance, managing growth, distribution strategy, transportation network, fulfillment operation, delivery operation, and information architecture. The experience of the online grocery industry and the lessons learned, we believe, should prove to be highly instructive for all e-Commerce retailers.
